Join Elise McNamara and Ian Nash at the beautiful gardens of "Briar Hill” Teesdale, for a day of poultry workshops. Rarely open to the public, the stunning gardens of Briar Hill feature drought tolerant plantings of Australian natives formally and informally mixed with a large range of succulents, iron sculptures, fruit trees and veggie gardens. Combined with rare breed poultry, Briar Hill is a must see!

ABOUT SESSION 1: SIMPLE STEPS TO SUCCESSFUL BACKYARD CHICKENS (BEYOND THE BASICS)

Wondering how some people make chicken keeping look easy? Whether you've had chooks for years or are looking to start a flock of your own, join me to learn the tips and tricks of that will have your hens staying healthy and keeping your pantry full of eggs!

What you'll learn:

1. Caring for heritage chickens vs Isa Browns
2. Best breeds and where to find healthy pullets and hens
3. Diseases of fowls, health checks, parasites and symptoms of illness and which products actually work
4. The BEST feeders, drinkers, coops/houses
5. Hygiene, housing, yard and bedding considerations including deep litter
6. Summer care (planning for heat waves), autumn care (annual moulting) and winter care - avoiding respiratory illnesses
7. Feeding - Grains, Greens, Grit & Grubs. My favourite feeds and how to pick a good quality feed.
8. Basics of behaviour including broody/clucky hens and preventing boredom
9. The secret old breeders’ tips for keeping your feathered friends in tip top condition.

WHO IS THIS WORKSHOP FOR? Most people that attend this workshop have had chickens for a while (some, years) but they are keen to hear about new, different and easier ways of doing things. If you're considering getting chickens for the first time, you'll start off on the right foot! Know what to look for when purchasing birds, the best feed, the best coop, the best feeder, the best bedding etc for your set up. I also cover the keeping of commercial layers such as Isa Browns, and what you need to do differently if you have them in your flock.

ABOUT SESSION 2: BREEDING, INCUBATING, BROODING & INTRODUCTION TO EXHIBITION POULTRY

Long-time breeder Ian Nash breeds for exhibition (poultry shows) as well as preserving rare breed poultry. He's had success with many breeds over the years, and is a member of the Essendon Poultry Club and Hamburgh Club of Australia. 

What you'll learn: 

  1. Selecting birds for breeding (avoid common mistakes)
  2. Egg collection, storage and incubation - how to maximise hatch rates
  3. The ideal brooder box - feeding, drinkers, litter to use etc
  4. Important considerations for hatching under a broody hen
  5. Feeding and rearing from hatch to point of lay (or the show pen!)
  6. Choosing and preparing a bird for show

WHO IS THIS WORKSHOP FOR? If you already breed or show fowls, or interested in getting started, this is workshop for you!
